SWAS Stream Storywalk

Mātahi Moana - Aoraki & Te Horokōau behind
for many years THERE HAS BEEN A programme to Awhi the small tributary awa that flows adjacent to South Westland Area School As alumni of this awesome Kura Vicki has through multiple funding avenues looked for ways to engage ArtEcology practices with the school & Community

Creatives in Schools

The Ministry of Education funding enables a project to be carried out alongside the students and staff by a professional artist. Kura work alongside the artist to showcase the potential of arts as a career and empowers staff to consider art within their teaching practice. The kaupapa for this project was to tell the story of the stream project. Across the school year I worked with the kura to create different artworks. The SWAS StreamWalk StoryMap to describes the project and its timeline. Class levels up to Year 9 worked on individual projects exploring different aspects of the freshwater ecosystem and the benefits of restoration. Students learned about stream health, the plants and animals in and around waterways and constructed ways to showcase their learning. The Year 10s learned to create with ArcGIS StoryMaps and used these skills to build components of the SWAS Story Walk, a way for whānau and community to share the experience of discovery. They showcased their fantastic work at the Year 11 lead assembly 2025. The Senior School took part in planting preparation work as fund-raising opportunities and alongside community members engaged in a planting event that extended the riparian protection further downstream.
